White Momma Needs Help!

Ok, I am admitting white momma failure here! Toben's head is horrible! He is all dry and flaky. John was washing his hair every other day, which I think is probably too often. So we are switching to once a week (although this morning the pediatrician told us to wash it every day, I'm not sure she knows what she is talking about!). I have tried two different types of lotion and even vaseling (because that is what the PA at our pediatrician had recommended). So suggestions for getting rid of flaky scalps is greatly appreciated! Maybe this is why I don't have a girl! :)

Hey HollyAnn...don't laugh! When I was in Uganda, I became friends with one of our hosts quite quickly (actually we consider ourselves brother & sister). I was asking him all kinds of questions about sun lotion, hair & such... I'll put an email out to him & then let you know what he said. But I do remember me being surprised that he does wash his hair everyday. But we also have to remember we have different climate. I'll ask. :) Karen

I work with two black women who have been giving me hair tips for when the kids come home. They were very adamant in telling me not to shampoo more than once a week.

I haven't used any but I hear Carolsdaughter.com has great product for African hair. There is also a yahoo group called adoptionhair_skincare that has a wealth of information. Good luck!

When our boys came home, one of their heads was really dry and flaky, too. We've been washing only once a week and then using conditioner and creme every day. And there are no more flakes and dry spots. I heard good things about Curly Q's for kids and decided to use that on our boys. I think its working great. Here's their site:

I have also heard that coconut oil works great, too. I'm going to try that at some point.

Good Luck!

We wash Jameson's hair once a week. We also put lotion directly on his scalp everyday. I use Johnson and Johnson's baby shea butter 24 hour moisture.

Don't wash his hair more than once a week unless there is something in it. I know it feels strange since you're used to washing your kids' hair more often but they really don't need it. We use Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo and it seems to be fine since we wash so rarely. Any time he has a bath wet his hair and then put lotion or oil on his hair afterwards while it's still wet. For skin I use olive oil first and then Melaleuca lotion over the oil (you could probably use any lotion over the oil). It makes their skin so amazingly soft and no dry skin or ashiness anywhere!

After a bath (every other day) I put aveeno lotion all over the boys heads we also just wash their heads with unscented dove soap, since we shave it down. It seems to be working. Hannah's heads all dry though, its hard to keep it oiled up under all those braids!

I second Emily, Aveeno baby or just plain Aveeno works very well. We apply it on Luke everywhere, scalp and all. I apply it on days he doesn't bath as well. He gets very dry quickly. He gets a bath twice a week. It is easier for us to prevent him from getting to dry in the summer months. Love you!!!

I don't have any advice. Twiggy and Slim (our stick figure kids) don't have any issues with dryness. haha

Katie Borchert might have a good idea, but it looks like you have gotten quite a few already.

I have used the lotion and it just doesn't seem to work. I have used the aveeno, some arbonne and a suave lotion also. But I will keep experimenting with the lotions and will most definitly cut back on the washing and see what happens. Does anyone else's son throw fits about being lotioned? ALl I have to say is it is a good thing he is not a girl who has to sit through braides!

Oh yeah, I agree with the consensus here. Only once a week. have you tried straight coconut oil on his little head?

HollyAnn,
Though I don't have any experience yet, I know Jen seems to have mastered the art of caring for her children's skin and hair. You can go to her blog at grace and glory for a post she has. I know she only washes their hair once a week, and I think then she doesn't use soap or shampoo, but either olive oil or cocoanut oil.
